Compare Sizes of the Sun and Eight Planets

The following list gives the sizes of the Sun and the eight planets in our solar system:
  • Sun: The Sun is the largest object in our solar system, and it's much bigger than all of the other planets combined. Its diameter is about 1.39 million kilometers (864,938 miles).
  • Mercury: Mercury is the smallest planet in our solar system. Its diameter is about 4,880 kilometers (3,032 miles).
  • Venus: Venus is the sixth largest planet in our solar system. Its diameter is about 12,104 kilometers (7,521 miles).
  • Earth: Earth is the fifth largest planet in our solar system. Its diameter is about 12,742 kilometers (7,918 miles).
  • Mars: Mars is the seventh largest planet in our solar system. Its diameter is about 6,779 kilometers (4,212 miles).
  • Jupiter: Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system, and it's much larger than all of the other planets. Its diameter is about 139,822 kilometers (86,881 miles).
  • Saturn: Saturn is the second largest planet in our solar system. Its diameter is about 116,460 kilometers (72,367 miles).
  • Uranus: Uranus is the third largest planet in our solar system. Its diameter is about 50,724 kilometers (31,518 miles).
  • Neptune: Neptune is the fourth largest planet in our solar system. Its diameter is about 49,244 kilometers (30,599 miles).
Remember that these sizes are compared relative to each other, and that they are all very large compared to anything we see on Earth! Understanding the relative sizes of the Sun and the eight planets helps us (1) understand the structure and organization of our solar system, and the interactions with each other; (2) study the properties and characteristics of each planet, and how the size of a planet affecting its atmosphere, gravity, and other physical properties; (3) understand the formation and evolution of our solar system, and it was formed and evolved over time. Showing kids pictures of the Sun and the eight planets in scale can help make the solar system more tangible and understandable to kids, and encourage their interest in science and astronomy. Seeing the relative sizes of the Sun and the planets in a scale model can help kids grasp the immense size of our solar system. By seeing the planets arranged in order of size or distance from the Sun, kids can better remember their names and order. Seeing the incredible size and diversity of the planets can pique kids' interest in space exploration and inspire them to learn more about our universe. By studying the planets' sizes, distances, and characteristics, kids can learn further about scientific concepts such as gravity, mass, and the properties of matter.
